Baker Mayfield Could Play Sunday Against the Cardinals

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles told the media that quarterback Baker Mayfield is on track to play on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

He looked good today, so he’s on track to play. He had to recover. He was very limited on Wednesday, did a little more yesterday, and moved perfectly today, so he’s good.

Mayfield suffered a low-grade sprain in the AC joint of his left shoulder, the one he doesn’t use for throwing, last week against the Los Angeles Rams, which forced him to miss the second half of the 34-7 defeat, the Bucs’ third consecutive loss. Teddy Bridgewater, the backup, took the majority of practice reps this week while Mayfield rested. Mayfield said Wednesday that the pain was subsiding. An MRI revealed no structural damage. Mayfield emphasized that this is not the same injury he suffered with the Cleveland Browns in 2021, an injury with which he admitted, in retrospect, that he was not well enough to play.

I don’t think I was physically able to do the things I wanted to in 2021 with a shoulder injury. That’s the most important thing, I don’t want to hold this team back.

Mayfield explained that the current injury is very different from the previous one.

I completely dislocated my shoulder, had a labrum tear, a partial tear in the rotator cuff, and broke the bone in the socket, so it’s very different. Now, it’s really about pain tolerance management, being able to move and being able to throw and go from there.

Mayfield stated that they see the next five games as “win or die” situations. In the NFC South, they are currently only half a game ahead of the Carolina Panthers, whom they will face twice in the coming weeks.
