Rueben Bain Jr., NFL prospect, involved in car accident
Former Miami defensive end and 2026 NFL draft prospect Rueben Bain Jr. was involved in a car accident in 2024, in which a passenger later died due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Bain was cited for negligent driving for the accident that occurred around 4 a.m. local time on March 17, 2024, on Interstate 95 northbound in Miami.
The accident report alleges that Bain was driving a 2021 Land Rover SUV carrying three other passengers: Hurricanes football players Wesley Bissainthe and Nyjalik Kelly, along with a 22-year-old woman from Georgia, Destiny Betts. Bain’s vehicle rear-ended another car, veered into a concrete barrier, and then bounced off another barrier before stopping on the shoulder of the highway.
Betts was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami. According to reports, Betts was in a coma for almost three months before passing away from her injuries on June 13, 2024.
Bain was cited at the time of the incident, but the charges were dropped before Betts’ death. No sobriety tests were performed at the scene, according to the accident report.
In a statement, the Betts family called the accident a “tragic accident” and said that “we wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career.”
Bain was entering his second season at the time of the accident.
Currently, Bain is ranked number 15 in the latest NFL draft prospect list this month. In his junior season in 2025, Bain had a standout season, helping Miami reach the college football playoff championship, recording 9.5 sacks, 15.5 tackles for loss, and five quarterback pressures, leading the country in quarterback pressures.
