Justin Fields Responds to Jets Owner’s Criticism

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields has responded to criticism from team owner Woody Johnson, indicating that he will not seek a conversation to clarify the situation. Nor does he expect Johnson to approach him.

“I don’t think talking to him is going to do any good,” Fields said Wednesday after practice. “It won’t make me play better. It won’t give me more confidence on the field, so I don’t think there’s necessarily a point in talking about it, and I doubt he’ll come talk to me.”

Fields, who has struggled on the field, could lose his position to Tyrod Taylor. The situation at the quarterback position took an unexpected turn when Johnson, during an NFL meeting, blamed Fields for the 0-7 start to the season. Fields commented that he was unaware of Johnson’s comments until reporters informed him, although the topic was addressed by Aaron Glenn during the team’s morning meeting. The relationship between the quarterback and the team owner is not close. Fields revealed that they met for the first time before a recent game and that their interactions are limited to brief pre-game conversations. “I’m not bothered,” Fields stated about the owner’s criticism. “Of course, everyone knows that I need to play better and that we need to play better as a team. And, of course, no matter how the offense goes as a unit, I’ll be blamed. And I get it, that’s what comes with the job. You can’t let anything affect your mind.” Fields, 26 years old and under contract until 2026, avoided answering the possibility of requesting a transfer. Johnson sparked controversy by alluding to Fields’ poor performance, saying: “It’s difficult when you have a quarterback with the rating he has. He has skill, but something isn’t working.” Glenn indicated that he and Johnson are “on the same page” regarding the personnel. On Wednesday, Glenn declined to name the starter for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, seeking to create a competitive advantage.
