Kaleb McGary Injury: A Blow for the Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta Falcons coach Raheem Morris reported Friday night that right tackle Kaleb McGary will be out for a considerable time due to an injury suffered during Wednesday’s practice.

Following the preseason defeat against the Dallas Cowboys, Morris indicated that McGary could be placed on the injured reserve list. This would mean that McGary would miss at least the first four games of the season.

McGary was apparently injured before the 11-on-11 practice period on Wednesday. He was taken off the field on a cart and was seen limping, with the help of an athletic trainer.

The player underwent surgery on his left knee during the offseason, which prevented him from participating in the team’s spring practices.

McGary’s absence creates a significant void on the offensive line, which must protect the blind side of second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. McGary’s backup, Storm Norton, will also miss six to eight weeks due to ankle surgery performed on Tuesday.

Elijah Wilkinson, a versatile offensive lineman, replaced McGary at the right tackle position during Thursday’s practice. Wilkinson has played in that position for the Denver Broncos in the past, and also played in nine games for the Falcons in 2022 as a left guard.

McGary, 30, is about to begin his seventh season as the Falcons’ starting right tackle. So far this month, he signed a two-year, $30 million contract extension with Atlanta.
