Chiefs win and Reid downplays Kelce discussion: NFL

In a week’s time, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, starred in a heated exchange on the sidelines with coach Andy Reid. This incident occurred during the team’s 22-9 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday night. The altercation between Reid and Kelce took place in the second quarter of the game. During the discussion, Reid brushed Kelce with his left shoulder.

I love Travis’ passion, man. I’m good with that. We didn’t have enough of that in the second quarter. It wasn’t where we needed it to be, so, rightfully so, he knows when to back off and when to push it too.

Reid, in his 13th season as Chiefs coach, stated that he was not worried about Kelce’s attitude or words. “He’s a guy who gives it his all. Sometimes, I have to be the policeman. He’s an emotional guy,” he added. Kelce, a 13-year veteran, was not available to the media in the Chiefs’ locker room after the game. At the time of the verbal dispute, the Chiefs’ offense was experiencing another moment of difficulty. Despite leading 6-0, Kansas City had failed to score after the defense recorded its first fumble recovery of the season. Safety Chris Roland-Wallace intercepted a pass from Giants quarterback Russell Wilson, giving Patrick Mahomes and the offense the ball at the New York 47-yard line. However, rookie running back Brashard Smith fumbled a pass, Kelce’s reception resulted in a 2-yard loss, and Mahomes threw an incomplete pass, leading the Chiefs’ offense to end their attempt before reaching the red zone. The 40-yard field goal attempt by kicker Harrison Butker went wide right. Mahomes stated after the game that he had not witnessed Kelce’s interaction with Reid.

He’s a guy who loves this. That’s what’s made him so great. I know they love each other. That’s what you want from the greats.

In the Chiefs’ 20-17 home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2, Kelce slammed his helmet and yelled at Reid on the sideline in the second quarter. In the “New Heights” podcast, which he co-hosts with his brother Jason, Kelce commented last week: “I have to be there for my teammates, knowing that [the coaches] put a lot on my plate to be a good player for this team. I need to answer that call, man.” When Kelce expressed his frustration to Reid on Sunday, he only had two receptions for 4 yards. The Chiefs’ offense performed better in the second half, when Mahomes led two touchdown drives. Kelce finished the game with four receptions for 26 yards. As he left the field at MetLife Stadium, Kelce smiled as he congratulated several teammates on securing the victory. Reid concluded: “Don’t make too much of it. He’s a passionate guy, and I love that part. I’ve been through a lot with him. All of that is part of this. I love that he likes to play. That’s what I love. It’s an emotional game, so I’ll accept it.”
