Deatrich Wise Jr. Suffers Quadriceps Injury and Misses the Season

Washington Commanders defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. suffered a tear in his left quadriceps and will be out for the rest of the season. The injury occurred during Thursday’s loss against Green Bay, with a score of 27-18. Wise will need surgery, which ends his participation in the season. This is a tough loss for Washington’s defense, as Wise, at 6 feet 5 inches and 280 pounds, brought strength and size to the team. The Commanders signed him to a one-year contract in the offseason, aiming to bolster a defense that ranked 30th against the run last season. The team is still awaiting news on the severity of running back Austin Ekeler’s injury, who left the game with what the team fears is a ruptured Achilles tendon. In addition, two other starters, receiver Noah Brown and tight end John Bates, also suffered groin injuries and left the game. The severity of both injuries is not yet known. Wise was injured at 7 minutes and 34 seconds of the second quarter, and it was immediately clear that the injury was serious. His teammates knelt on the field and then almost the entire team gathered around him. He was taken off the field on a stretcher. Wise, 31, posted a message on Instagram expressing his gratitude for the prayers and support.

Message from Deatrich Wise Jr.

In his message, Wise said: “This was an unfortunate experience, but when you give so much to the game and do everything possible to improve for yourself and for the success of your teams, it can feel like there’s a lot at stake. When you stop, it can feel like everything around you also stops.” He also referenced his faith and said that, “on the bright side,” he will be able to spend more time with his family. The Commanders valued their depth on the defensive line. Wise provided the necessary strength and was considered a strong leader. The team also includes Dorance Armstrong and Javontae Jean-Baptiste, as well as Von Miller, who they signed primarily to pressure the passer. Defensive end Jalyn Holmes is on their practice squad. In August, they released veteran Clelin Ferrell. Wise played his first eight seasons in New England.
