Justin Herbert Suffers Fractured Left Hand, Requires Surgery

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert suffered a fractured left hand during his team’s 31-14 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. The surgical procedure is scheduled for Monday. Herbert hopes to play in the Chargers’ next game, on December 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles on “Monday Night Football”.

It’s one of those things where you just stabilize it, and unfortunately I’m not the doctor, but they were hopeful. So I think that’s a good thing.

The injury occurred in the first quarter, when Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn hit Herbert while he was running. Chinn’s helmet appeared to directly impact Herbert’s left hand. Despite the injury, Herbert remained in the game, showing clear signs of pain, and threw a touchdown to wide receiver Quentin Johnston on the next play. Subsequently, Herbert went to the locker room with the trainers and missed nine plays while they applied a cast and a glove to his left hand. Herbert mentioned that the most difficult part of continuing to play was gripping the ball. Because of this, the Chargers didn’t take any plays from the center for the rest of the game. Backup quarterback Trey Lance was prepared to take snaps from the center in any goal-line scenario, according to Herbert.

I think it’s something we’ll monitor as the week goes on.

Two seasons ago, Herbert fractured the middle finger of his left hand in a game against the Raiders. The Chargers primarily played from the shotgun formation to manage that injury.

I think in terms of experience, I’ve been through similar situations, so I think it will be helpful. But at the end of the day, you just have to go out there and make sure everything is okay, that you’re comfortable.

With four minutes remaining in the final quarter on Sunday, Raiders outside linebacker Maxx Crosby shoved Herbert while celebrating after a third-down conversion. The officials flagged Crosby for unsportsmanlike conduct, which led to another celebration by Herbert. A brief confrontation between players ensued, and an argument occurred between Chargers wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal and Crosby.

It’s an emotional game, and I have nothing but respect for him as a player and as a teammate, but at the end of the day I could have kept my cool a little better too.

Herbert finished with 15 of 20 passes completed, 151 air yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Herbert’s injury comes at a crucial moment in the season for the Chargers, who are looking to make the postseason for the second year in a row. Four of the Chargers’ last five opponents were in the playoffs last season, and all of them (Philadelphia, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, and Denver Broncos) are competing for spots and a better ranking.
