Broncos’ Drew Sanders Suffers Ankle Injury

Denver Broncos linebacker Drew Sanders was forced to leave the training field on Saturday due to a right ankle/foot injury. The incident occurred during team exercises, approximately 90 minutes after practice began. Sanders, after finishing a play, tried to keep the weight off his right leg, visibly limping. Broncos medical personnel evaluated Sanders’ right ankle and foot injury on the sideline before the player was carted to the locker room. Subsequently, Sanders underwent an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).

Broncos coach Sean Payton indicated he had no information on the severity of Sanders’ injury, but confirmed that “it’s not his Achilles tendon”.

Sanders, who was selected in the third round of the 2023 draft by the Broncos, was limited to playing in the last four regular season games of 2024, as well as in the playoff loss against the Buffalo Bills in the wild card round. The Broncos’ defensive coordinator, Vance Joseph, has consistently praised Sanders’ athleticism, expressing optimism during the offseason about the impact Sanders could have as a situational player at the inside linebacker position and as a pass rusher. In recent training sessions, Sanders has been acting as a substitute at the inside linebacker position, while Alex Singleton recovers from an ACL tear suffered in Week 3 of last year, and Dre Greenlaw, newly arrived as a free agent, has missed practice due to a hamstring injury. In addition, right tackle Mike McGlinchey missed his third consecutive practice, although he was present on the field on Saturday, observing the exercises with a brace on his right leg.
