Antonio Brown Could Face Up to 30 Years in Prison for Attempted Murder

Former NFL star receiver Antonio Brown could face a prison sentence of up to 30 years if found guilty of attempted murder. The prosecution reported on Monday that the severity of the possible sentence is due to the use of a firearm in the incident. Brown appeared via video in a brief arraignment hearing in Miami-Dade Circuit Court. His attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, reiterated that Brown has already pleaded not guilty. Last week, Brown was released from jail after posting a $25,000 bail and was ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor. In Florida, the charge of attempted murder carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison in many cases. However, Assistant State Attorney Stephanie Cruz explained that, because Brown allegedly used a firearm, he could face twice that amount of time behind bars due to a firearm sentencing enhancement. The law also establishes a possible mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in the event of a conviction. Brown, 37, made no statement during the hearing. Judge Marisa Tinkler-Mendez provisionally set a status hearing for December 22. A trial date has not yet been scheduled. Brown is accused of taking a gun from a security staff member after a celebrity boxing match in Miami on May 16 and firing two shots at a man he had gotten into a fistfight with, according to an arrest warrant. Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu told investigators that one of the bullets grazed his neck.

The affidavit is incorrect and that Brown used his personal weapon, and the shots were not directed at anyone.

Mark Eiglarsh
In a previous hearing, Eiglarsh stated that the document is erroneous and that Brown used his personal weapon, and that the shots were not directed at anyone. Brown has stated on social media that he defended himself from an attack and that others tried to steal his jewelry. Brown played 12 years in the NFL and was an All-Pro wide receiver. His last game was in 2021 with Tampa Bay, where he won a Super Bowl championship alongside quarterback Tom Brady. Much of his career was spent in Pittsburgh. During his career, Brown accumulated 928 receptions for over 12,000 yards and scored a total of 88 touchdowns, including kick returns and a pass. Last week, Brown was extradited from Dubai, where he has business interests, after an arrest warrant was issued for the charge of attempted murder in June.
