SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle will be reevaluated in one to two weeks, according to sources, after an MRI on Monday revealed a strain in his left hip flexor. Castle, who is shaping up to be one of the favorites for the NBA Rookie of the Year award in the 2024-25 season, suffered the injury in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Sacramento Kings and did not play the second half of that game. Castle commented in the locker room after the game that he felt some pain, but could not specify when the injury occurred.

“When we talk about muscles and soft tissues, something I don’t know much about, you have to work and see how the body responds, and then work a little more and see how the body responds,” said San Antonio coach Mitch Johnson on Tuesday before his team’s 111-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Castle, 21, has been one of the league’s breakout players this season, averaging 17.3 points, 7.5 assists, and 5.8 rebounds. Along with his injured teammate, Victor Wembanyama, they achieved triple-doubles in the November 12 loss against the Golden State Warriors, making the pair the fifth in NBA history, and the first for the Spurs, to each produce a 20-point triple-double in the same game.

“We don’t sideline our players when they can play and we’re never going to risk or rush someone back,” Johnson said. “That’s why we’re always operating as we operate. We hope to get these players back soon.”

Wembanyama attended a morning workout on Tuesday. He did not participate in team drills, but was seen dribbling and training alone. In other injury news, the Spurs announced that veteran point guard Jordan McLaughlin underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed a strain in his right hamstring. McLaughlin suffered the injury during a court workout on Monday at the Victory Capital Performance Center.
