Rockets Send Cam Whitmore to the Wizards
The Houston Rockets have finalized a trade that sends Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards in exchange for two second-round picks.
Whitmore, selected by the Rockets with the 20th pick in the 2023 NBA draft, failed to secure significant playing time in Houston. This move offers the player, who will turn 21 this week, the opportunity to take on a more important role on the rebuilding Wizards team.
Additionally, the transfer represents a homecoming for Whitmore, who is from Maryland.
The Rockets collaborated with Whitmore and his representatives from WME Basketball in recent weeks to find a new destination. Houston’s management considered several offers for Whitmore, but was looking for an environment where the player could thrive.
The Wizards have had an active offseason, acquiring veteran guard CJ McCollum and center Kelly Olynyk from the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for Jordan Poole and Saddiq Bey, as well as a second-round pick swap. They also selected Texas guard Tre Johnson with the fifth pick in last month’s draft.
For their part, Houston made a significant trade to acquire Kevin Durant and added veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith and center Clint Capela in free agency.
Whitmore, a 6-foot-7-inch forward, averaged 10.8 points in two seasons with Houston. Last season, he recorded 0.46 points per touch, ranking fourth among players with 1,000 touches, according to data.
