Pelicans rookie Derik Queen to miss start of training camp with injury

New Orleans Pelicans rookie Derik Queen will likely miss the start of training camp due to an injury.

Queen underwent surgery on Friday to repair a torn ligament in her left wrist.

The injury occurred on Tuesday while playing in an NBA Summer League game.

The Pelicans reported that Queen will be re-evaluated in approximately 12 weeks, meaning the evaluation will take place after training camps have begun.

The surgical procedure on Friday was performed to treat a torn scapholunate ligament. The operation was performed by Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles.

Queen, who is 6-foot-9, was named Big Ten Rookie of the Year after averaging 16.5 points for Maryland.

His buzzer-beater against Colorado State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament propelled the Terrapins to the Sweet 16, where they lost to eventual national champion Florida.

He was selected with the 13th pick in the draft by Atlanta and the Pelicans acquired his rights in a trade.
