DETROIT – The Detroit Pistons have announced that Jaden Ivey, their star guard, will be out of action for the next four weeks due to surgery on his right knee. This setback delays the player’s expected return, generating concern among fans. Ivey, who missed the last 49 games of last season due to a left fibula injury, was only able to participate in one preseason game before new discomfort arose. Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff explained that the injury was not the result of a specific play, but rather a problem that developed gradually during training and the preseason.
Ivey, selected in the fifth position of the 2022 draft, was having a promising season before suffering a collision with Magic guard Cole Anthony on New Year’s Day. At that time, he was averaging 17.6 points and 41% effectiveness in 3-point shots, both career-high figures. It was something that developed during his work. Obviously, since he returned, but also in training camp, he began to feel something.

In the absence of Ivey, the Pistons acquired experienced guard Dennis Schroder to reinforce the backup point guard position last season. Bickerstaff is confident that Marcus Sasser and Daniss Jenkins, a two-way player, can fill the void left by the injury. In addition, Ausar Thompson is expected to take on greater responsibility as the primary facilitator when Cade Cunningham, the All-NBA guard, is on the bench.
As for Ivey, it could be up to 10 months before he returns to action in the regular season. The player is eligible for a rookie-scale contract extension, as long as the team and he reach an agreement before the October 20 deadline. The Pistons will take special precautions during Ivey’s recovery, given the string of injuries suffered by one of the league’s fastest players. Our priority is to do the right thing for our players and never put them in a situation where we feel we have to rush them back. We know the impact that can have on him, both physically and mentally, and also in the long term.
