Daniel Gafford, Mavericks center, suffers ankle sprain

Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford will be out of action for two to three weeks due to a sprained ankle suffered on Tuesday during the first training camp practice, according to coach Jason Kidd on Wednesday.

This injury puts Gafford’s participation in the Mavs’ season opener on October 22 against the San Antonio Spurs in doubt.

Gafford already missed the last two months of the 2024-25 Mavs season, which was marked by injuries, after suffering a Grade 3 medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain in his right knee on February 10.

Since his arrival in Dallas before the 2023 trade deadline, Gafford has averaged 11.9 points on 72.7% shooting, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks, sharing the starting center position with Dereck Lively II. This summer, he signed a three-year, $54 million contract extension.

P.J. Washington also missed Wednesday’s practice after hitting his head, but Kidd said the veteran forward could return after the team’s day off on Thursday.
