Jones, known for his outstanding career on the court, comes to this role after a successful period in the management of the Phoenix Suns. During his 14 years as a player in the NBA, Jones won two championships with the Miami Heat and one with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Subsequently, he worked for seven seasons in the Phoenix Suns’ office, most of the time as general manager.

“I am excited and honored to take on the responsibility of leading the Basketball Operations department,” Jones expressed. “This is an exciting opportunity to pour my passion for the game into a new role and collaborate with so many talented professionals to drive the continued success and growth of the NBA.”

In his new role, Jones will oversee various aspects related to NBA basketball operations, including the rules of the game and their interpretation, the conduct and discipline of players and coaches, as well as the policies and procedures related to the development of games. He will report directly to Byron Spruell, President of League Operations.

“James is widely respected throughout the NBA for being an inspiring leader and a consummate teammate during his more than 20 years as a player and a highly successful team executive,” commented Spruell. “With his exceptional relationship-building skills and deep basketball experience, he is well-prepared to guide our efforts to shape the current and future direction of the NBA game.”
