Koby Altman Secures His Future with the Cavaliers: Contract Extension Until 2030

Cleveland Cavaliers President Koby Altman has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the franchise through the 2029-30 season. This announcement comes after the team’s notable growth and its outstanding performance last season, where they achieved first place in the Eastern Conference. Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert has rewarded Altman and his management team, including general manager Mike Gansey and assistant general manager Brandon Weems, with multi-year extensions. This decision reflects confidence in the team’s direction and success. In the last three seasons, the Cavaliers have proven to be one of the most competitive teams in the NBA, with the third-best record in the league. They have reached the playoffs every year and in the 2024-25 season achieved the second-highest number of wins in franchise history. In the recent playoffs, the Cavaliers reached the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they were defeated by the Indiana Pacers in five games. The team faced challenges due to key injuries, including Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and De’Andre Hunter, who missed playing time. Altman’s extension was finalized before the playoffs, with representation by Bret Just of WME Basketball. Under Altman’s direction, the team has made significant moves, including the draft of Evan Mobley, Defensive Player of the Year, and Darius Garland, two-time All-Star. They also facilitated the arrival of Jarrett Allen and the stellar acquisition of Donovan Mitchell in 2022. Furthermore, in the previous offseason, they hired Kenny Atkinson, who was named Coach of the Year. In the current offseason, the Cavaliers have made strategic moves, such as the trade to acquire Lonzo Ball from the Chicago Bulls, with the aim of reinforcing the backup point guard position, and the renewal of Sam Merrill, in addition to the return of veteran Larry Nance Jr. Koby Altman, who was promoted to general manager in July 2017 and then to president of basketball operations in 2022, receives this extension, which represents the third for him and his team, a testament to the patience and long-term building strategy on the part of the ownership. In addition to on-court successes, Gilbert has also spearheaded initiatives off the field, such as the successful pursuit of a WNBA franchise for Cleveland, obtaining a team at the end of June. Likewise, the ownership group is building a modern 210,000-square-foot practice facility for the Cavaliers.
