Santo Domingo. The NBA Cup championship has meant much more than sports for Karl-Anthony Towns. The New York Knicks center has announced a donation of US$530,000, a prize obtained after winning the mid-season tournament, to the Dominican Republic. These funds will be allocated to community programs and housing projects through his foundation. The Knicks were crowned champions after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 124-113 in the final held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This victory made the New York franchise the third to lift the NBA Cup trophy, ensuring each player a significant financial incentive. Despite playing with a calf injury, Towns was instrumental in the decisive game. The 30-year-old player finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and two steals, with six of 12 field goal attempts, in a game of high physical intensity and offensive pace. The star player’s act of solidarity is deeply linked to his roots. Son of a Dominican mother, Jacqueline Cruz, Towns maintains a constant bond with the country and has represented the Dominican Republic in international competitions, including the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

In 2017, Towns founded the KAT Team Foundation, an organization dedicated to expanding educational opportunities, supporting low-income youth, and raising awareness about autism. His social work was recognized in 2024 with the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award, one of the most prestigious NBA awards in this field. While the Knicks celebrate a title that confirms their good performance, for Karl-Anthony Towns the victory takes on an extra dimension: converting sporting success into a direct investment for the development and well-being of the Dominican Republic.
