Russell dominates Canadian GP sprint: Mercedes shines in Formula 1

MONTREAL, Canada – British driver George Russell took victory in the sprint race of the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix, held this Saturday at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. This event marked a milestone in Formula 1 history, being the first time this race format was held on Canadian soil.

Russell, at the wheel of his Mercedes, demonstrated absolute dominance of the race, maintaining a consistent pace from start to finish to secure his first sprint victory of the season.

Lando Norris, also British and McLaren driver, placed in second position, followed by the Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who completed the podium.

This result underscores Mercedes’ progress in the championship. For Russell, it represents the third sprint victory of the 2026 season, out of a total of six short races scheduled.

Antonelli, who currently leads the World Championship, added crucial points, solidifying his position in the overall standings and highlighting the good performance of the team.

The day was not favorable for the Spanish drivers. Carlos Sainz Jr. finished outside the points, in tenth position, while Fernando Alonso was forced to abandon the race before completing it.

The Canadian Grand Prix will continue with the qualifying session and the main race, crucial events in the fight for the 2026 Formula 1 world championship.
