NFL Surprises: Shocking Cuts in 53-Player Rosters

The deadline to define NFL rosters for the 2025 season has brought unexpected moves and significant cuts. Several prominent players have been released, generating surprise among fans and analysts. Among the most striking cuts are receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, running back Deuce Vaughn, and center Cole Strange, who will not be part of the 2025 season with their original teams. Marquez Valdes-Scantling, two-time Super Bowl LVII and LVIII champion with the Chiefs, was released by the Seattle Seahawks. This decision surprised many, given that Valdes-Scantling had signed a $4 million contract during free agency. Deuce Vaughn, who had an outstanding performance as a rookie with the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, was also cut by the Texan franchise. However, there is a possibility that Vaughn will remain in the organization if he is signed to the practice squad. The New England Patriots made a relevant decision by releasing Cole Strange, who was the starting center in 29 games over three seasons. The franchise will bet on Garrett Bradbury as the main center, in addition to having Caedan Wallace and Mike Onwenu to strengthen the offensive line.

Other Notable Movements

In addition to the names mentioned, other striking cuts include:
  • Tony Jefferson (S, Los Angeles Rams)
  • Tommy DeVito (QB, New York Giants)
  • Brenden Rice (WR, Los Angeles Chargers), son of the legend Jerry Rice
  • Terique Owens (WR, San Francisco 49ers), son of Terrell Owens
  • Frank Gore Jr. (RB, Buffalo Bills), son of Frank Gore
  • Shilo Sanders (S, Tampa Bay Buccaneers), son of Deion Sanders
In total, approximately 1,000 players were released during the deadline, while the 32 franchises adjusted their rosters to start the 2025 season with 53 members each.
