Santo Domingo 2026: Significant Advances in the Preparation of the Central American and Caribbean Games
A little over a year until the celebration of the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026, the president of the Organizing Committee, José Monegro, offered an optimistic assessment of the progress of the works and the logistics of the most important multi-sport event in the region. During a visit to the sports facilities of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center, Monegro highlighted the progress of the work, assuring that the country is on its way to successfully receive the athletes of the continent.Luisín Mejía Oviedo, president of Centro Caribe Sports, accompanied Monegro on the tour, closely following the preparation process. Monegro revealed that the challenge posed by Mejía Oviedo to the organizing team was to have the works ready by December 2025. Monegro stated that 90% of the necessary facilities will be ready in November of this year. He explained that some works will not be completed beforehand for strategic reasons, seeking to minimize interventions before the event. The President of the Organizing Committee also confirmed that they are working with the same vision in Parque del Este, as part of an integral plan that seeks to convert both that complex and the Olympic Center into two large urban sports parks serving the most populated communities in the country: the National District and Santo Domingo East.“For us it is very satisfying, because not only in 2026 will Santo Domingo be the Central American and Caribbean sports capital, but we are seeing concrete progress. Many facilities are already in the cleaning and final details phase,” Monegro indicated.

Mejía commented that significant advances are usually realized in the final stage of the process. “Here’s a transition that usually happens near the end, that’s already part of our idiosyncrasy. When it’s not about money, it’s about time. But we’re on the right track,” he concluded.“This transformation will also have an urban impact. The idea is to integrate the Parque del Este into the city, to break that perception that it is isolated. This will turn it into a true center of community integration,” he added.
