MESA, Arizona – Bob Melvin returns to the Oakland Athletics, this time as a special assistant to baseball operations. The organization announced his hiring, marking a new chapter in the relationship between Melvin and the team.

In his new role, Melvin will advise the board directly on sports matters, bringing his vast experience and knowledge of the game.

Melvin’s connection with the Athletics dates back to his childhood, when he attended the Coliseum to watch his idols play. Years later, this connection was strengthened during his successful time as the team’s manager.

A Historic Manager

Melvin, 64, left an indelible mark on the franchise. He is the second manager with the most victories in the history of the Athletics, with 853 wins, surpassed only by the legend Connie Mack.

During his tenure as manager, between 2011 and 2021, he led the team to six postseason appearances, including three divisional titles and three wild card classifications. His performance earned him two Manager of the Year awards.

After his time with the Athletics, Melvin managed the San Diego Padres and later the San Francisco Giants.

In his career, Melvin has a record of 1,678 wins and 1,588 losses in 22 seasons. He was also recognized as Manager of the Year with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007.
