Relaunch of the Women’s Sports Games Will Boost Dominican Women’s Sports

Santo Domingo – The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kelvin Cruz, announced this Tuesday the relaunch of the Women’s Sports Games. This event, which will bring together more than 680 athletes in 11 disciplines, has as its main objective to strengthen the development of women’s sports in the Dominican Republic. Minister Cruz highlighted that this initiative, which returns after almost a decade of absence, is part of the commitment of the government led by Luis Abinader. The goal is to expand opportunities for women in sports and promote essential values such as discipline, equality, and talent. The games will be dedicated to Melba Segura de Grullón, in recognition of her outstanding career and her valuable contributions to social development through the Sur Futuro Foundation. In addition, Cruz reported on the official inauguration of the sports facilities in Ciudad Juan Bosch, in Santo Domingo Este, as part of the boost to sports and community infrastructure in the area. The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Dominican Sports Museum. Camel Cury Lora, executive director of the VBC-RD Trust, also participated in the event, providing details about the new sports spaces. The organization of the games will be headed by Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino, who will chair the organizing committee. Senator María Mercedes Ortiz will act as the operational director of the event. The competitions will include various sports disciplines. Among them, indoor and beach volleyball, 5×5 and 3×3 basketball, athletics, judo, karate, taekwondo, wrestling, skating, weightlifting, duathlon and softball. The venues selected for the competitions are varied, including Bayaguana, the San Isidro Air Base and the Parque del Este. The Women’s Sports Games are supported by various government institutions, which reaffirms the State’s commitment to promoting women’s sports and social integration through physical activity. In attendance at the event were the president of the Dominican Olympic Committee, Garibaldi Bautista, as well as authorities from the Ministry of Women and the Ministry of Sports. They all highlighted the importance of the event for the growth of women’s sports in the country.
