Japan Secures First Place in Group C with Commanding Victory
TOKYO – Japan’s baseball team demonstrated its power by defeating the Czech Republic with a score of 9-0, thus securing its undefeated position in Group C of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The match took place at the Tokyo Dome, where the Japanese achieved an outstanding performance.
For a large part of the game, the Czech team maintained a solid defense, hindering the advance of the current champions. The Czech resistance kept the score at zero until the eighth inning, something that hadn’t happened against Japan in the Classic since 2013, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats.
The Czech Republic’s opening pitcher, Ondřej Satoria, was a key figure in the match. His performance included 4.2 innings without allowing runs and three strikeouts, which earned him the public’s recognition. Satoria, known for striking out Shohei Ohtani in the 2023 Classic, was cheered as he left the mound.
The eighth entry marked a turning point for Japan, which unleashed a relentless offensive. Ukyo Shuto connected a three-run home run and Munetaka Murakami drove in a grand slam, sending the ball 425 feet to center field. Murakami’s hit became the fifth grand slam of the tournament. In terms of pitching, the Japanese pitchers also shone. Hiroto Takahashi, Hiroya Miyagi, Yumeto Kanemaru, and Koki Kitayama combined their efforts to allow only two hits and accumulate 14 strikeouts, ensuring the shutout.
With this victory, Japan finishes the group stage with a perfect 4-0 record and prepares for the quarterfinals in Miami. There, they will face the loser of the match between the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.
Despite the defeat, the performance of the Czech Republic was highly praised, especially the performance of Satoria, who received a standing ovation for his effort in front of more than 42 thousand fans present at the Tokyo Dome.
