Cristiano Ronaldo: FIFA Sanction and the Road to the 2026 World Cup
The Portuguese star, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been the subject of a sanction imposed by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
The sanction consists of one match already served, corresponding to the qualifying phase for the 2026 World Cup against Armenia, and two additional matches, the latter conditioned on his future behavior.
This means that Ronaldo will be able to participate in the first match of the 2026 World Cup, unless he incurs a new disciplinary infraction.
The expulsion of Cristiano occurred in the match against Ireland in Dublin on November 13th. This was the first time the player received a direct red card in his 226 matches with the senior national team.
In the Ireland – Portugal match, Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg sent off Cristiano after an aggression against Irish defender Dara O’Shea. Initially, the referee showed a yellow card, but after reviewing VAR, he decided to show the red card.
