VENTAQUEMADA, COLOMBIA – The Colombian cycling world is in mourning following the tragic loss of Cristian Camilo Muñoz, a prominent cyclist who recently passed away due to an accident on European soil.
An emotional caravan accompanied Muñoz’s return to his homeland, a gesture of homage that reflected the profound impact he had on his community and on Colombian sport.
The funeral procession, led by fire department units and followed by a multitude of vehicles and cyclists, traveled the route to Ventaquemada, the municipality that saw this talented athlete born and raised.
Along the way, residents joined the tribute, displaying flags and farewell messages, thus demonstrating the affection and admiration they felt for Muñoz, an emblematic figure of local cycling.
The coffin was moved to the City Council, where a catafalque was installed. This space allowed family, friends, and community members to express their final farewell before the scheduled funeral honors.
Muñoz, who was 30 years old, lost his life on April 24 in Oviedo, after being transferred from France after suffering a fall during the Tour du Jura. His team, Nu Colombia, reported that medical complications derived from an infection worsened his health.
The cyclist, born in 1996, joined the team in 2024 and left a significant mark on the national scene, standing out for stage victories and the mountain title in the Clásico RCN.
The tribute will continue with a vigil and a mass, in a final farewell marked by the respect and admiration of an entire country.
