Leones del Escogido roar against the Águilas Cibaeñas
The Leones del Escogido demonstrated their power by defeating the Águilas Cibaeñas with a score of 5-2 this Sunday at the Cibao Stadium. This victory represents the sixth for the melenudos in the round-robin of the Dominican winter baseball championship.
Pitcher Conner Greene was key in the triumph, offering a solid pitching performance. In five innings, Greene allowed only one hit, gave up one walk, and struck out two batters. The only run he allowed came in the second inning, the result of two walks and a single.
With this result, the Leones del Escogido consolidate their position at the top of the Round Robin with a record of 6-1. For their part, the Águilas Cibaeñas remain in third place with a mark of 3-4.
The Escogido took the lead in the second inning, scoring two runs against Abdiel Mendoza. Junior Lake and José Marmolejos hit singles, and a double by Jorge Mateo drove in Lake. Mateo then scored thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Elier Hernández.
In the fifth inning, the red offense added two more runs. Socrates Brito hit a double, driving in Erik Gonzalez. Then, a ground ball by Lake to the shortstop extended the lead to 4-1.
The Eagles scored a run in the eighth inning, but the locals’ reaction was not enough. A double by Raimel Tapia brought Jonathan Guzmán to the plate, but the play was reviewed and overturned by the umpires.
The referee’s decision caused a brief interruption of the game because some fans threw objects onto the field. After the restart, an altercation occurred that resulted in the expulsion of Erik González.
Abdiel Mendoza took the loss, while Stephen Nogosek earned the save.
In terms of offense, Jorge Mateo stood out with two doubles, one RBI, and one run scored. Socrates Brito also had a good performance with a run-scoring double. For the Eagles, Cristhian Adames connected for two hits and drove in a run.
The next game for the Leones del Escogido will be this Monday against the Toros del Este at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium.
