Chess RD: Tribute to Néstor Matos in the 2025 Children’s and Youth Tournament

Santo Domingo – The Héctor J. Díaz Chess Club, along with Ajedrez Picante, kicked off the 2025 Children’s and Youth Chess Classic Tournament this Saturday. The event is dedicated to engineer Néstor Matos, current director of the Dominican Institute for Quality (INDOCAL), in recognition of his significant career as a chess player and his contributions to Dominican chess.

Tribute to Néstor Matos

During the opening ceremony, Matos expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reiterated his support for “science sport.” He highlighted that chess is an “excellent gym for the mind,” fostering creativity, analysis, and offering benefits for the mental and emotional health of young people.

Engineer Matos is highly respected in the chess community. He has been a constant supporter of chess, both in the game and outside of it. This dedication is a deserved recognition of his dedication to this sport.

Presley Nova also valued the active participation of children and highlighted the support of parents. The championship is taking place from June 20th to 29th at the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library (BNPHU). The tournament serves as a qualifying event for the 2025 Central American and Caribbean School Championship. Players from various provinces participate in six categories: U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, and U17. The champions of each category will obtain a full pass to the international tournament that will take place in Punta Cana from October 13 to 19, including registration, accommodation, food, and technical assistance.
