ST. PETERSBURG – Dominican Samuel Basallo once again demonstrated his offensive ability by hitting his seventh home run of the season. Despite his effort, the Baltimore Orioles fell to the Tampa Bay Rays with a score of 5-3, who completed the sweep in the series at Tropicana Field.
In the sixth inning, Basallo connected on a pitch that shot off at 105.4 miles per hour, sending the ball to right field. The Dominican catcher finished the game batting 4-2, scoring a run and driving in another.
This outstanding performance raised his batting average to .277. In addition, he added 18 RBIs and an OPS of .832, solidifying himself as one of the young players with the most extra-base hits in the Major Leagues.
Basallo also maintains a solid ISO of .219, a sabermetric statistic that evaluates a batter’s power to hit extra-base hits. This number positions him as a batter with above-average power production.
From Tampa Bay’s side, Junior Caminero contributed two hits, being a key piece in the Rays’ offense, who rallied with a four-run rally in the eighth inning.
The Orioles seemed headed for victory thanks to the performance of starting pitcher Shane Baz, who pitched six innings, allowing only one run and striking out six batters.
However, Tampa Bay’s offense reacted in the eighth inning against reliever Anthony Nuñez. Jonathan Aranda tied the game with a run-scoring double, followed by a single by Richie Palacios that gave the home team the lead. A well-executed double steal allowed Oliver Dunn, who was debuting, to score the fifth run.
Reliever Jesse Scholtens earned the win after pitching four innings and allowing two runs, while Ian Seymour earned his second save of the season.
With this victory, Tampa Bay extended its streak to four consecutive wins and finished a successful home stand with a 5-1 record. On the other hand, Baltimore is going through a difficult time, with six losses in its last eight games.
