Ulberg Knocks Out Reyes: Meteoric Rise in UFC and Eyes Title

3 Min Read

Carlos Ulberg demonstrated his power in the UFC octagon with an impressive first-round knockout over Dominick Reyes at UFC Fight Night in Perth. Ulberg, currently ranked third in the light heavyweight division, extended his undefeated streak to nine fights since February 2022. The City Kick Boxing fighter solidifies himself as a top-tier contender in the category, just before the expected UFC 320 title fight between Magomed Ankalaev and Alex Pereira. Despite being the favorite, Ulberg faced a dangerous opponent like Reyes, who came with a streak of three consecutive victories. However, from the start, Ulberg dominated the fight, controlling the distance and preventing Reyes from landing effective blows. A straight left appeared to stagger Reyes, as Ulberg continued to pressure. With less than a minute in the first round, Ulberg seized the opportunity. A left hook connected with Reyes, making him stumble, and a powerful right hook sent him to the canvas, ending the fight.

My goal with Reyes was to box him, and he felt the power from the beginning, and I saw in his eyes that he didn’t want to feel that again, so at the next opportunity I went with the two and knocked him down.

The fighter celebrated with the Perth fans, before turning his attention to next week’s title fight.

I’m going to Las Vegas. I’ll be in the cage there. … I’m going.

Ulberg also confirmed that he requested to be the official alternate for the UFC 320 main event. “I am here to break records, this is what I want to do. I don’t think anyone has fought a fight and the following week fought for the title. And that’s what I envision. If they can make me the alternate, that would be incredible,” he added. In other featured results on the card, Tom Nolan secured a submission victory over Charlie Campbell, Jack Jenkins earned a decision victory after a comeback, Neil Magny staged an impressive comeback in the third round to defeat Jake Matthews by submission, and Jimmy Crute continued his resurgence in light heavyweight by submitting Ivan Erslan. Of the 11 Australian and New Zealand fighters who participated in the card, 10 were victorious.
