Charles Oliveira Returns Triumphant in Rio de Janeiro

In a spectacular return to his homeland, Charles Oliveira demonstrated his resilience and talent by submitting Mateusz Gamrot in the main event of the UFC Fight Night held at the Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Victory came just 105 days after suffering a knockout in a lightweight title fight. Many in the mixed martial arts world wondered if Oliveira had returned too soon, but the Brazilian fighter dispelled any doubts with a dominant performance.

I’m trying to hold back the tears right now. This is for you, the Brazilian fans. This isn’t about money, fame, or status. This is for Brazil.

Oliveira submitted Gamrot with a rear-naked choke at 2 minutes and 48 seconds of the second round, solidifying his legacy in the UFC. With this victory, the Brazilian extended his UFC records for finishes (21) and submissions (17). In addition, he tied Neil Magny for the most wins in UFC history with 24, only behind Jim Miller, who has 27. Immediately after his triumph, Oliveira reiterated his desire to face the BMF champion and ranked lightweight Max Holloway, a fight he had already proposed before the fight. Both fighters faced each other in 2015, in a featherweight fight that had an unusual ending. Oliveira entered the octagon with his characteristic Muay Thai style, pressuring Gamrot from the start. Although Gamrot managed a takedown in the first round, Oliveira responded with an omoplata threat to reverse the position and take his opponent’s back. In the second round, Oliveira landed strikes before securing a bodylock and lifting Gamrot off the ground. Finally, he took Gamrot’s back and executed the choke, a moment Oliveira had been waiting for since March 2020. Before this victory, Oliveira was already ranked number 4 in the UFC lightweight division. Gamrot was ranked number 8. Max Holloway is coming off a five-round decision over Dustin Poirier in July.
