New York City Mayor Intervenes After Fight at UFC 322
The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, has announced his intention to legally address the fight that took place at the UFC 322 event, held at Madison Square Garden. On Monday, Adams shared video footage of the fight, which involved Dillon Danis, former training partner of UFC star Conor McGregor, and several members of the UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev’s team. The incident occurred in the arena area, moments before the main card of UFC 322. Makhachev headlined the event and won the welterweight championship against Jack Della Maddalena. The UFC usually overlooks altercations between athletes “behind the scenes”, but Adams made it clear that the city will take action. In the press conference following the UFC 322 event, UFC CEO Dana White announced the permanent ban of Danis from future UFC events. Danis has a history of public altercations and had posted derogatory comments and photos, some of them false, about Makhachev online in the days leading up to UFC 322.These assaults at Madison Square Garden are completely unacceptable. The New York Police Department is already conducting a full investigation, and everyone responsible will be held accountable.

Several videos showed that Makhachev’s teammates, Magomed ‘Chanco’ Zaynukov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, were involved in the incident, including blows to the back of Danis’ head. Danis was immediately removed from the arena by security. Makhachev’s teammates were also removed and watched the world title performance from outside the venue. The animosity between Danis and Makhachev’s team dates back to 2017, when McGregor challenged Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, for the UFC lightweight championship.
“When you talk about someone for the last five years, when you meet him, you have to answer for what you said,” Makhachev said on the night of the fight.
