New York City Mayor Intervenes in UFC 322 Fight
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his intention to legally address the fight that took place at the UFC 322 event at Madison Square Garden. On Monday, Adams shared video footage of the fight, which involved Dillon Danis, former teammate of UFC star Conor McGregor, and several teammates of UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. The fight occurred on the arena floor, moments before the main card of UFC 322 on November 15. Makhachev headlined the event and won the welterweight championship over Jack Della Maddalena. In the press conference after the UFC 322 fight, UFC CEO Dana White announced that Danis was permanently banned from future UFC events. Danis has a history of public altercations and had posted derogatory comments and photos, some of which were false, about Makhachev online in the days leading up to UFC 322. Multiple videos showed that Makhachev’s teammates, Magomed ‘Chanco’ Zaynukov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, were involved in the incident, including throwing punches at the back of Danis’s head. Danis was immediately escorted out of the arena by security. Makhachev’s teammates were also removed and watched their performance for the world title from another location. The animosity between Danis and Makhachev’s team dates back to 2017, when McGregor challenged Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, for the UFC lightweight championship. These assaults at Madison Square Garden are completely unacceptable. The New York Police Department is already conducting a full investigation, and everyone responsible will be held accountable.
