Kelvin Gastelum Misses Weight Again: Fourth Time in His Career
UFC veteran Kelvin Gastelum has once again had issues with weight. This time, Gastelum failed to meet the limit set for the fight against Dustin Stoltzfus at UFC Noche.
Gastelum, 33, weighed in at 191 pounds on the scale, exceeding the 185-pound limit for the middleweight category. This is the fourth time in his career that Gastelum has failed to make weight, and the first in the middleweight division.
Despite this, Dustin Stoltzfus, who did make weight, agreed to proceed with the fight. As a result, Stoltzfus will receive 35% of Gastelum’s purse.
Gastelum finally won the fight by unanimous decision.
Gastelum (19-10) has a history of weight issues, especially in the welterweight category. In 2014 and 2015, he did not make weight for 170-pound fights.
In 2016, the UFC was forced to cancel a fight between Gastelum and Donald Cerrone at 170 pounds, because Gastelum significantly exceeded the weight. The New York State Athletic Commission refused to sanction the fight and suspended Gastelum for six months. After that incident, the UFC forced him to move up to the middleweight division.
