Yankees Designate DJ LeMahieu for Assignment
The New York Yankees have made a significant decision by designating DJ LeMahieu for assignment this Wednesday, which presumably marks the end of the veteran infielder’s career with the organization. Despite still owing him $22 million through next season, the team has opted for this move.
The decision comes one day after manager Aaron Boone announced that LeMahieu would no longer be the team’s starting second baseman, moving to a bench role. Boone noted that LeMahieu did not take the news of his demotion well, although he clarified that the player did not request his release.
LeMahieu, who is four days away from turning 37, batted .266 with a .674 OPS this season, showing increased production since the beginning of June.
However, LeMahieu’s ability to cover ground at second base was limited and, according to general manager Brian Cashman, he had communicated to the organization during the offseason that he could not physically play at third base.
The two-time batting champion signed a six-year, $90 million contract before the 2021 season.
LeMahieu was facing a diminished role after the Yankees decided to move All-Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. from third base to his natural position at second base.
