Edmundo Sosa Leaves Game After Collision with Brandon Marsh

The Philadelphia Phillies’ third baseman, Edmundo Sosa, had to leave Saturday’s game against the New York Yankees after being hit in the back by left fielder Brandon Marsh. The incident occurred during a play in the seventh inning, while they were trying to catch a fly ball from Jazz Chisholm Jr. Sosa was diagnosed with a back contusion and will be further evaluated, according to the team. In the play, Sosa, Marsh, and shortstop Trea Turner went for the ball in left field. Turner backed off, Sosa made the catch, but was knocked over by Marsh, causing the ball to fall out of his glove. After Phillies head athletic trainer Paul Buchheit and manager Rob Thomson attended to Sosa, the third baseman slowly walked off the field with Marsh’s arm around him. Initially, the umpires called Chisholm safe, but the call was overturned to an out that ended the inning after a video review, determining that Sosa had possession of the ball before it touched the ground. Otto Kemp entered as a pinch hitter for Sosa in the eighth inning.
