Max Scherzer Returns to the Mound with the Blue Jays

The three-time Cy Young Award winner, Max Scherzer, returned to the mound with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night, pitching five innings and allowing three runs.

That’s a good check mark. Maybe something you look for when you come back and recover. Good in that sense. In terms of actually throwing, a little rusty. Could execute better. Threw okay, didn’t throw great.

Scherzer, who is recovering from inflammation in his right thumb, allowed six hits and three walks, with four strikeouts in 83 pitches. The Blue Jays lost to the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 in 10 innings. The next step for Scherzer will depend on how his thumb feels on Thursday, as thumb problems can lead to shoulder problems.

It’s been frustrating dealing with this for really the third straight year. Finally I get back out here, get back to throwing, get that adrenaline rush. You just don’t get it in the minor leagues.

At 40 years old, Scherzer threw his most pitches since last July 25th, with 55 of 83 pitches for strikes. He allowed a double with two outs in the fourth inning, and a pitch clock violation resulted in one of his walks.

I made a bad pitch, so I’m not going to blame the clock.

Max Scherzer
Scherzer finished with a fifth scoreless inning and a 4-3 lead. In February, he signed a one-year contract for $15.5 million with the Blue Jays. He left his debut in Toronto against Baltimore on March 29 after three innings due to discomfort in his right latissimus dorsi muscle. The next day, Toronto placed Scherzer on the injured list due to inflammation in his thumb. The Blue Jays declared Scherzer ready to return after he threw between 30 and 40 pitches in a bullpen session on Sunday morning. Scherzer allowed two runs, struck out four and walked none in 4⅓ innings in the second of two rehab starts for Triple-A Buffalo last week, and struck out eight in 4⅓ scoreless innings for the Bisons in a home start against Worcester before that.
