Ryan Bergert to Injured List with Forearm Discomfort

The Kansas City Royals announced that starting pitcher Ryan Bergert will be placed on the injured list due to a right forearm strain. The situation arose in the bullpen before Wednesday night’s game, where the Royals defeated the Seattle Mariners with a score of 7-5.

Bergert was scheduled to open Friday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Bergert’s spot in the rotation will be taken by right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen. The latter, who was scheduled to pitch multiple innings in relief on Wednesday, will make his debut as a starter.

Lorenzen made his first relief appearance in the regular season since September 28, 2024, in Atlanta, after having been the starter in his first 24 appearances. In his relief appearance, he retired the batters in the fifth inning with 12 pitches and currently has an ERA of 1.29 (1 earned run in 7.0 innings) in three relief appearances in the regular season with the Royals.

Wednesday’s opener, Cole Ragans, got a no-decision for the Royals after pitching 3⅔ innings in his first start since June 5, after recovering from a left rotator cuff strain.
