Roman Anthony Leaves Game Due to Oblique Strain

The Boston Red Sox’s star rookie, Roman Anthony, left Tuesday night’s game against the Cleveland Guardians due to a left oblique strain. The team confirmed that he will undergo an MRI on Wednesday, according to manager Alex Cora. Anthony, visibly affected, grabbed his lower back after a swing on the third strike in the bottom of the fourth inning. He did not return to the field in the top of the fifth, being replaced in right field by Nate Eaton.

I don’t know. I wish I did. I haven’t dealt with something like this before. So I’d be lying if I said I knew. But then again, we’ll know by morning, I’m sure.

Roman Anthony
The possible absence of Anthony would be significant for the Red Sox, who are only 2.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays at the top of the American League East Division. Since his promotion in June, the 21-year-old player has been a key element in Boston’s resurgence, batting .291 with an OPS of .861, eight home runs, and 31 RBIs before Tuesday’s game. Anthony entered the season as the number 1 prospect in baseball. He recently signed an eight-year, $130 million extension with the team.

Obviously, losing Roman today is a tough blow. Obviously, one of the best players in all of baseball, but we have to move on and nobody needs to try to do more. Nobody needs to try to do more than they are capable of. They just need to try to execute their game plan the same way we’ve been talking about all year and keep finding ways to win.

Teammate Marcelo Mayer, who began the season as baseball’s No. 6 prospect, joined the Major League team before Anthony in May, but has since undergone season-ending wrist surgery. Kristian Campbell, the third of Boston’s promising prospects, began the season as the club’s starting second baseman, but was sent to Triple-A Worcester in June after some initial struggles.
