Texas Rangers Bolster Pitching Staff with José Ruiz
The Texas Rangers have strengthened their pitching staff by acquiring right-hander José Ruiz and cash considerations from the Atlanta Braves. The transaction was finalized on Thursday, in exchange for right-handed pitcher Dane Dunning.
Ruiz, 30 years old, has split his season between the Triple-A affiliate teams of Philadelphia and Atlanta. He is expected to report to the Round Rock, a Triple-A team.
Before this change, Ruiz participated in 16 relief games for Philadelphia. He was designated for assignment on June 1 and claimed by the Braves on June 7. With Atlanta, he pitched in two games. His combined record in 18 games is 1-0, with an ERA of 8.82 and 15 strikeouts in 16 and one-third innings.
The Venezuelan has an 11-9 record, one save, and an ERA of 4.62 in 282 games over nine seasons in the Major Leagues. He has played for the San Diego Padres, the Chicago White Sox, Arizona, Philadelphia, and Atlanta.
For his part, Dunning, also 30 years old, recorded an ERA of 3.38 in 10 innings and two-thirds, with no decisions in five games this season with Texas. After being acquired from the White Sox in December 2020, he accumulated a record of 26-32, with an ERA of 4.36 in 122 games for the Rangers.
