Cal Raleigh approaches Bonds’ home run record and leads the Mariners to victory
In an exciting baseball game, Cal Raleigh demonstrated his power by hitting two home runs, adding his 37th and 38th home runs of the season. With these impressive performances, the Seattle Mariners player is only one home run away from tying Barry Bonds’ record set in 2001 before the All-Star break.
The Mariners achieved a resounding victory over the Detroit Tigers with a score of 12-3, ending Tarik Skubal’s three-month undefeated streak.
Raleigh, who was the designated hitter in this game, drove the score to 5-3 with a solo home run in the eighth inning. Subsequently, in an explosive ninth inning, he hit a grand slam, adding four more runs for his team, in an episode where the Mariners scored seven runs.
This was Raleigh’s eighth multi-home run game of the season, tying Reggie Jackson (1969) for the most such games before the All-Star break in MLB history. In addition, he tied Ken Griffey Jr. for the most multi-home run games in Mariners history.
The Mariners still have two more games, both against the Tigers, before the All-Star break, giving Raleigh the opportunity to tie or break Bonds’ record.
Tarik Skubal, who had a 10-0 record with a 1.62 ERA in 16 starts since his 3-2 loss to the Mariners on April 2 in Seattle, allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in five innings, striking out five.
Luis Castillo (6-5) earned the win, allowing three runs in five innings.
Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when center fielder Parker Meadows tried to catch a hit by Donovan Solano, but missed, resulting in a run-scoring triple.
J.P. Crawford drove in a run with a two-out single in the fifth, and Rodríguez hit a two-run homer.
Riley Greene drove in a run with a triple in the sixth, and Spencer Torkelson followed with a sacrifice fly.
