José Alvarado Suspended for 80 Games: Phillies Lose Their Star Reliever

Philadelphia Phillies reliever José Alvarado has been suspended for 80 games without pay due to a violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

MLB announced on Sunday that Alvarado tested positive for exogenous testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance.

The suspension takes effect immediately. By regulation, Alvarado will also be ineligible for this year’s postseason.

Alvarado leads the Phillies with seven saves this season. He is 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 20 appearances. He has struck out 25 batters and walked four in 20 innings pitched.
