Ozzie Albies, Braves Star, Suffers Hand Fracture

ATLANTA – Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies left Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals due to a fracture in the hook bone of his left hand. Albies showed discomfort in his wrist after missing a throw in the third inning while batting against Washington’s right-handed pitcher, Konnor Pilkington. He remained in the game for one more pitch before heading to the dugout and being attended to by Atlanta’s medical staff. Nick Allen completed Albies’ at-bat and replaced him at second base at the start of the fourth inning.

“He felt something there that was a shock,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said after Atlanta’s 11-5 victory that extended the team’s winning streak to nine games, the best of the season.

The hamate bone is located on the palm side of the hand, near the little and ring fingers. Albies fractured his left wrist in July 2024 and missed two months. Albies, 28, has played in all 157 of Atlanta’s games this season. He is batting .240 with 16 home runs and 74 RBIs.

“I feel so bad for him,” Snitker said. “(Tuesday) will be the first game he misses all year. He played most (of the season). He bounced back and had a really good year. It’s just one of (those) tough things. It’s not an uncommon injury for hitters.

“This is a different (injury),” Snitker said, referring to Albies’ wrist fracture in 2024. “I’ve seen players come back from this in a month. Once the schedule changes, he’ll be able to get into his offseason routine and hit and be ready for spring training.” Snitker hinted that Albies will undergo surgery, although the Braves said Albies is undergoing more tests.

“(The surgery) is usually what they do when they break (the hook) is (to remove it),” Snitker said. “It’s one of those things where they won’t (get injured) again.”
