Orioles and Angels finalize a strategic trade
The Baltimore Orioles have acquired outfielder Taylor Ward from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for right-handed pitcher Grayson Rodriguez. This strategic move seeks to satisfy specific needs for both teams.
The Orioles, seeking a power hitter for the outfield, get Ward, who is in his final season before free agency. Meanwhile, the Angels, in need of a high-level starter, hope Rodriguez, a promising prospect, will fulfill that role.
Rodriguez, 26 years old, with a four-year contract, had a promising performance in his first seasons in the Major Leagues. However, an elbow injury kept him out of action in 2025. He is expected to be ready for spring training.
Ward, 32, has proven to be a versatile player, adapting from catcher to third base and finally to left field. Between 2024 and 2025, Ward recorded a batting average of .237/.320/.450 with 61 home runs and 178 RBIs.
By trading Ward, the Angels clear the way for other outfielders and seek to reinforce their position in center field.
In the Orioles, Ward joins Colton Cowser and Tyler O’Neill, providing greater solidity to the outfield. Rodriguez’s departure sharpens the Orioles’ need to seek starting pitchers.
The presence of Rodriguez was key in preventing the management from seeking external help, and his injury affected the team’s expectations. At the Angels, he will join Yusei Kikuchi, Jose Soriano, and Reid Detmers, seeking to strengthen a pitching staff.
By trading Ward for Rodriguez, who is still in the pre-arbitration stage, the Angels save approximately $13 million in salary for 2026.
