Mets Shake Up Roster: Semien Arrives, Nimmo Departs
The New York Mets’ general manager, David Stearns, has announced a significant change in the team’s strategy, promising not to repeat the previous year’s formula. The most recent decision involves trading outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers for second baseman Marcus Semien. This move, which gained momentum during the general managers’ meetings in Las Vegas, marks a turning point for the Mets.Last season, the Mets experienced a decline in the second half, missing the postseason after reaching the National League Championship Series in 2024. This change seeks to balance the lineup and strengthen the team for next season. Semien, 35, saw his OPS drop to .669 last year, with a .230 batting average and 15 home runs, his lowest amount in a full season since 2018. Stearns is confident in a recovery in Semien’s performance, highlighting his other qualities.“We recognize that what we did last year was not enough, and repeating with the same group was not the right thing to do,” Stearns said in a video conference.

This transaction also opens up opportunities in the Mets’ outfield, where Jeff McNeil could get more playing time, as well as for young prospects in the coming years. McNeil could also play more at first base, depending on how the offseason unfolds for New York. First baseman Pete Alonso and closer Edwin Díaz are currently free agents.“He’s a player who can contribute to the team’s success in various ways. Although his batting isn’t the main thing, we trust his defensive contributions and his performance on the bases. We believe that’s how he’ll help us win games.”

Stearns was questioned about the financial capacity to bring these players back and add more in free agency, especially in the outfield.“We would love to have Edwin and Pete back. They are great Mets. I won’t go into details about the conversations we’ve had so far.”

Stearns also expressed his gratitude to 32-year-old Nimmo for waiving his no-trade clause to complete the deal. Nimmo is under contract until 2030, while Semien has three years remaining on his contract. Nimmo’s popularity among New York fans was an important factor for the Mets, but they ultimately decided to make the trade.“I believe anything is realistic at this point. The space on the roster isn’t unlimited, but I’m confident that we will have the support and resources necessary to put together a very good team on the field.”

“We had to think about it a lot. That’s part of this. That makes decisions like this a little more difficult than they would be otherwise.”
