Surprising MLB Change: Semien to the Mets, Nimmo to the Rangers
A high-caliber trade is in the works in Major League Baseball. The New York Mets and the Texas Rangers are finalizing a deal that will send second baseman Marcus Semien to the Mets and outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Rangers. Nimmo has agreed to waive his no-trade clause, thus facilitating the completion of the deal. His career with the Mets began when he was selected with the thirteenth overall pick in the 2011 draft. Semien, a three-time All-Star player, joined the Rangers in 2022 and managed to win the World Series with them the following season. The Rangers have been looking for ways to cut costs this offseason. This is due to the reduction of their payroll and the fact that four players, shortstop Corey Seager, right-handed pitchers Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi, along with Semien, are scheduled to earn more than $25 million next year. Although the Rangers will take on more money in the long run with Nimmo, who has a $101.25 million contract over the next five years, the annual sum is less, as Semien will earn $72 million over the next three seasons. This trade marks the first move of what is expected to be an active winter for both teams, especially for the Mets. Their decline in the last months of the season led New York to miss a postseason spot and a major overhaul in their coaching staff. The acquisition of Semien, who won a Gold Glove this year, aligns with the main objective of the president of baseball operations, David Stearns, to improve run prevention this winter.
