Shea Langeliers Makes History with Three Home Runs
Shea Langeliers, Athletics catcher, became the fourth catcher in MLB history to achieve two three-home run games. This feat occurred during his team’s 16-7 victory against the Nationals.
Langeliers, who batted first in the order for the first time, hit a home run against MacKenzie Gore to open the game. Later, in the fifth inning, he repeated the feat against Orlando Ribalta.
In the seventh inning, Langeliers hit his third home run of the game, this time against Andry Lara, joining Johnny Bench, Gary Carter, and Travis d’Arnaud as the only catchers with two three-home run games in their careers. Previously, he had achieved this feat on April 9, 2024, in a game against Texas.
Langeliers is the only catcher in league history with a three-home run game from the lead-off position, and now has 22 home runs on the season.
The 27-year-old also connected on a double in the eighth inning, finishing the game with a 5-for-6 mark, three RBIs, four runs scored, and 15 total bases. Both the hits and runs scored are personal bests, while the total bases tie the most for a catcher in a game since 1900.
This impressive performance comes less than two weeks after his teammate, Nick Kurtz, hit four home runs and tied the MLB record with 19 total bases in a game against the Astros.
Langeliers and Kurtz are the first pair of teammates since 1900 to have a game with 15 or more total bases in the same season.
The Athletics achieved a season record with 24 hits. Brent Rooker and JJ Bleday each contributed four hits, marking the first time the Athletics have had three players with four or more hits in a game since 1979.
