Hunter Greene Leaves Reds Spring Training With Elbow Discomfort

Right-handed pitcher Hunter Greene has left the Cincinnati Reds’ spring training camp due to right elbow discomfort.

Manager Terry Francona and president of baseball operations Nick Krall informed reporters that Greene will undergo an MRI in Cincinnati and be examined by Dr. Timothy Kremchek, the team’s orthopedic consultant. In addition, Greene will consult with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ head physician.

Greene was expected to be the Reds’ ace, and he had added more lower-body work to his offseason routine in hopes of avoiding injury.

Last season, Greene had a 7-4 record with a 2.76 ERA, helping Cincinnati earn a National League Wild Card for their first playoff appearance since 2020. His average fastball velocity of 99.5 mph on his four-seam fastball led the Major Leagues among those who threw at least 1,250 pitches, but he was limited to a minimum of 19 starts and 107⅔ innings. Despite this, his 296 pitches at 100 mph or more were second in the Major Leagues, behind Mason Miller’s 422.

Greene was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 9 due to a right groin strain. He returned on May 23 and made three starts before returning to the injured list with the same injury. This time, he was out until August 13.

Greene, 26, is entering his fifth season in the Major Leagues. He was selected for the National League All-Star team for the first time in 2024, with a 9-5 record and a 2.75 ERA in 26 starts. He also had 169 strikeouts in 150 1/3 innings, despite spending time on the injured list that year due to elbow discomfort.
