Willson Contreras Receives Suspension After On-Field Incident

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras has been suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed amount due to his behavior in the 7-6 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates last Monday. Contreras, who appealed the suspension to Major League Baseball, was able to play in Tuesday’s game, where the Cardinals fell 8-3 to the Pirates. In that game, Contreras went 0-for-3, driving in a run with a groundout in the sixth inning. After Tuesday’s game, Contreras chose not to comment on the suspension, pending the hearing. On Monday, Contreras threw a bat that accidentally hit Cardinals hitting coach Brant Brown, and threw chewing gum onto the field after being ejected. Manager Oliver Marmol was also ejected during a heated argument with the umpires after a called third strike in the seventh inning.

Apparently, he heard something he thought I said. I didn’t say that.

Contreras stated that he did not understand why he was ejected from the game. According to his account, he discussed balls and strikes with umpire Derek Thomas, but did not refer to a specific pitch or say anything disrespectful. Team manager Jordan Baker informed a reporter that Contreras and Marmol were ejected for “saying vulgar things” to Thomas. Baker also indicated that Contreras made contact with the umpire. In his appearance before the media on Tuesday, Marmol was questioned about the possible appeal deadline and responded to reporters: “My thought is that we will probably hear something on [Wednesday] morning and then we’ll see what happens.”
