Bryan Woo Leaves Game with Chest Discomfort
Seattle right-hander Bryan Woo had to leave the game against the Houston Astros due to a pectoral strain, after throwing some warm-up pitches in the sixth inning. After Woo began to warm up on the mound for the sixth inning, the team’s manager and coaches approached. After a brief conversation, the All-Star left the field with the manager, and Eduard Bazardo replaced him.Woo commented that he felt “a little tension” but went out to try to pitch in the sixth inning.“He had a little tightness in his pectoral,” said manager Dan Wilson after the Mariners’ victory, which put them in first place in the American League West. “He alerted us and that’s why Bazardo was warming up. We’ll know more tomorrow. Probably an MRI, and we’ll know a little more tomorrow, but that’s all we know at this point.”

Woo added that he felt “great throughout the game” and that the tension appeared in the fifth inning.“I didn’t feel it was the best for the team,” he said. “I felt Baz was ready to go in. We’ll do some tests tomorrow and I’ll know more. I really don’t know much.”

Wilson explained that upon returning to the dugout after the fifth inning, Woo informed the coaching staff about the problem. Woo dominated for five innings, allowing one hit and one walk, while striking out seven in the first game of a crucial series between rivals, who started the night tied at the top of the division.“I just felt it at the end,” he said. “I thought it was smart not to force it.”

Woo earned the victory, improving his record to 15-7. He threw 67 pitches and lowered his ERA to 2.94. Carlos Correa hit the only hit against Woo, a double with one out in the fourth inning. Woo has 198 strikeouts this season.“It’s an important series, obviously, but I tried to treat it like any other game,” Woo said. “Obviously, you have to do the work and come out with urgency, but not try to do anything more. Just do your job.”

“I think, obviously, you care in some way, but on the other hand, Bryan is a tough guy,” Wilson said. “It was smart of him to let us know. There was no reason to force him. We’ll just find out more tomorrow.”
