Lance McCullers Jr. to Injured List
The Houston Astros have placed right-handed pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. on the 15-day injured list due to a sprained right foot.
This decision, retroactive to Friday, comes after McCullers made seven starts this season, marking his return after missing two full seasons due to various arm injuries.
The young right-handed pitcher Ryan Gusto will take his place in Monday’s opening, as the Astros, leaders of the American League West Division, begin a four-game series against the Athletics.
McCullers has a 1-2 record with an ERA of 4.91 this season. In his last start, he allowed four hits and four runs, striking out six in five innings in a 4-2 loss to the White Sox.
McCullers’ injury adds to a series of setbacks for the Astros’ rotation.
- Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco are out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
- Spencer Arrighetti has been inactive since April after breaking his right thumb in batting practice.
- Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier are still recovering from Tommy John surgery.
To cover his absence on the roster, the Astros have called up right-handed pitcher Jason Alexander from Triple-A Sugar Land.
